Svaka \u0161atorska zajednica, poznata kao \u201econtubernium\u201c, sastojala se od otprilike osam mu\u0161karaca i imala je ru\u010dne mlinove za pravljenje bra\u0161na. Prehrana legionara nije bila ni na koji na\u010din lo\u0161ija od prehrane obi\u010dnih gra\u0111ana Rima, koji su uglavnom jeli kruh i ka\u0161u.  <\/p>\n<h2>\u0160to je bilo na jelovniku za desert?<\/h2>\n<p>Slatka napast za obi\u010dnog Rimljanina sastojala se uglavnom od jabuka. No osim toga, Rimljani su uzgajali i drugo vo\u0107e poput kru\u0161aka, tre\u0161anja, \u0161ljiva i gro\u017e\u0111a, za \u0161to je mediteranska klima nudila idealne uvjete. Ora\u0161asti plodovi su se skupljali u obli\u017enjim \u0161umama. Osim vo\u0107nih sokova i vode, mlijeko se rijetko nalazilo u rimskom svakodnevnom \u017eivotu i uglavnom se koristilo za pe\u010denje i kuhanje. Ako se konzumira mlijeko, to bi prvenstveno trebalo biti ov\u010dje ili kozje mlijeko. Sirovo kravlje mlijeko rijetko je bilo dio prehrane i vjerojatnije je bilo povezano s obi\u010dajima naroda s one strane Dunava i Rajne koji su smatrani barbarima.   <\/p>\n<p>Osim \u0161to se vino \u010desto nalazilo na jelovniku pi\u0107a, Rimljani su ina\u010de vodili prili\u010dno zdrav \u017eivot prema dana\u0161njim standardima. Njihova prehrana bila je gotovo u potpunosti vegetarijanska, a meso se rijetko nalazilo na njihovom jelovniku, uglavnom u sve\u010danim prigodama. Glavni razlog za to bila je visoka cijena stoke. Na primjer, 79. godine nove ere u Pompejima su cijene bile oko 7,5 sestercija za modij (otprilike 8,7 litara ili 6,5 kilograma) p\u0161enice i samo oko 3 sestercija za istu koli\u010dinu ra\u017ei, dok je mazga ko\u0161tala nevjerojatnih 520 sestercija ili 130 denara.   <\/p>\n<p>Legionar pod carem Titom Flavijem Domicijanom mogao je o\u010dekivati \u200b\u200bpla\u0107u od oko 300 denara, umanjenu za cijenu opreme. Nasuprot tome, riba, posebno blizu obale, bila je \u0161iroko dostupna i jeftinija te se na doma\u0107em tr\u017ei\u0161tu prodavao kao usoljena riba. Svje\u017ea riba se \u010desto pekla na ro\u0161tilju i poslu\u017eivala s raznim umacima (vidi \u201eDe re coquinaria\u201c). Riba je tako\u0111er bila va\u017ean sastojak u proizvodnji &#8220;garuma&#8221;, popularnog ribljeg umaka poznatog i kao &#8220;liquamen&#8221;, koji se \u010desto koristio za konzerviranje.   <\/p>\n<p>Da bi se to postiglo, ribe poput tune, in\u0107una, jegulje ili sku\u0161e, uklju\u010duju\u0107i i njihove utrobe, mije\u0161ale su se sa salamurem, a smjesa se ostavljala da fermentira na suncu, ponekad i mjesecima. Tijekom ovog procesa, proteini u ribi razgra\u0111eni su enzimima u crijevima. Dobivena smjesa je zatim nekoliko puta pre\u0161ana i filtrirana kako bi se dobila bistra, jantarna teku\u0107ina. Dok su siroma\u0161niji slojevi obi\u010dno jeli samo somun sa soli, bogatiji Rimljani su svoj doru\u010dak oboga\u0107ivali jajima, sirom, medom i vo\u0107em.  <\/p>\n<p>Ru\u010dak ili \u201eprandium\u201c poslu\u017eivao se izme\u0111u 11 i 12 sati i smatrao se malim obrokom, iako ipak obilnijim od doru\u010dka. Hladna jela tipi\u010dna za prandium uklju\u010divala su kruh, \u0161unku, sir, jaja, ora\u0161aste plodove, masline, gljive, datulje i smokve. Vino, koje se \u010desto razrje\u0111ivalo vodom ili rafiniralo medom tijekom dana, u\u017eivalo se u \u010distom obliku.   <\/p>\n<h2>Jesu li Rimljani znali kako se pona\u0161ati za stolom?<\/h2>\n<p>Iako su se no\u017eevi i drugi pribor za jelo koristili u rimskoj kuhinji, \u017elice su bile preferirani pribor za jelo, jer su bile posebno neophodne za u\u017eivanje u umacima. Neke su \u017elice imale tako \u0161iljaste dr\u0161ke da su bile prikladne i za probijanje male hrane. Me\u0111utim, ljudi su uglavnom poslu\u017eivali hranu prstima, a pa\u017eljivo jedenje vrhovima prstiju smatralo se izrazom dobrog pona\u0161anja za stolom.  <\/p>\n<p>Salvete se nisu koristile samo za \u010di\u0161\u0107enje prstiju, ve\u0107 je bilo prili\u010dno uobi\u010dajeno i prihvatljivo brisati ruke o kosu djece robova, ako su ih bili prisutni. Salvete su se tako\u0111er koristile za zamatanje ostataka hrane i njihovo no\u0161enje sa sobom. Ova je praksa bila op\u0107enito prihva\u0107ena, pod uvjetom da se provodila u granicama pristojnosti.
