Andaz Munich: 5-star luxury with local color
Munich – Schwabinger Tor is a new urban quarter in the Bavarian capital in the Schwabing-Freimann district, which has received its most striking architectural attraction in the form of the Andaz Munich Hotel. The hotel tower rises 55 meters into the Bavarian sky and offers a magnificent view of the Munich skyline from the Roof Top Bar on the 13th floor – all the way to the edge of the Alps and the Olympic Park.
As a 5-star luxury brand, Andaz is part of the Hyatt Hotel Corporation and pursues an extraordinary concept: each hotel should blend in authentically with the architecture and culture of the respective destination. That’s why no two houses are the same. The Andaz Munich is the brand’s first German location – in Europe there are also branches in London, Amsterdam and Vienna.
Personal style: why each house has its own character
“Andaz” is a term borrowed from the Hindu language and means something like “individual style”. Each Andaz strives to reflect the character of its respective location in a subtle way. This is why the hotel brand hardly ever works with “off-the-peg” materials, but has them designed and manufactured in-house.
A catchy and creative example in Munich: The “ubiquitous” Bavarian rhombus leaves no doubt about the location. It can be found in the stone floor in the lobby, is artfully incorporated into various design elements, can be discovered in the diamond pattern of the parquet floors in the suites or on the supporting pillar cladding, in individual wooden ceilings, on decorative vases, etc.
For urban lifestyle luxury: cosmopolitan with local esprit
In this respect, Andaz stands for a special form of luxury that can be described as urban and cosmopolitan, but at the same time connected to the local esprit. The hotel’s 277 high-quality rooms and suites meet these requirements. Natural wooden floors and handmade sofas, care products from regional manufacturers, local works of art on the walls – the consistency of the concept creates an ambience that lends every room an endearing charm.
This even applies to the 2,000 square meter spa and wellness area or the atmosphere around the 17-meter pool and the cozy sun decks with a view over Munich’s rooftops – or at night into the breathtaking starry sky. The 2,000 square meters of function and event space, on the other hand, can be set up exactly as required for conferences, meetings, business meetings or various celebrations.
“The Lonely Broccoli”: And why the name just isn’t right
The restaurant in the Andaz allows itself a little tongue-in-cheek entrance joke: the name “The Lonely Broccoli” may evoke associations, but a glance at the appealing menus from the UHL manufactory somewhat destroys them: “The Lonely Broccoli” sees itself as a “Modern Meat House”. Head chef André Schmidt not only focuses on premium cuts, beef, pork and lamb from sustainable farming – he wants to make all parts of an animal tasty for his guests out of conviction.
And the maestro has come up with some ingenious creations of his own that taste as amazing as they are delicious. His pork popcorn, for example, is particularly praised by restaurant critics for its “concentrated taste with very fine roasted aromas”. The stylishly designed menus will also make vegetarians’ eyes light up: The selection of organically grown vegetables and regional herbs extends far beyond a solitary broccoli.
The Roof Top Bar: a touch of Venetian magic
A fine shining star in the Munich bar sky is the Roof top bar M’Uniqo in the 12. and 13th floor of the Andaz. The tasteful, Venetian-inspired furnishings create an ambience that is both stimulating and homely. Under the direction of Christian Schmidt, finely flavored vermouths, classic cocktails and some daring creations are served here – while the view over the Bavarian metropolis is unobstructed.
Delicious cicchetti, which are typical Venetian snacks, pizzette or bruschette are on the menu as a little treat for the palate.
The café to the bike – or vice versa
A change of scene and atmosphere: Café Bicicletta in the Andaz is an Eldorado for passionate newspaper readers, office workers who want to take a break in style, or the shopping exhausted. The changing menus include smoothies and bowls, homemade sandwiches and sweet and savory snacks. And of course coffee specialties.
In this case, the name is not only due to the bar stools modeled on bicycle saddles – or the bikes dangling from the ceiling: hotel guests can actually borrow bicycles free of charge at the day bar.
“The new trendy Schwabinger Tor district is characterized by openness and diversity,” says Mattheos Georgiou, General Manager of Andaz Munich. “We want our hotel to be a place of synergies – for interested travelers and guests who appreciate urban design and local art.” Like the giant, shimmering bronze-colored pretzel from a Munich art foundry, which pays its sculptural respects in the entrance area of the Andaz lobby – and has become the most popular selfie motif of the 5-star hotel.
