Falstaff Restaurant Guide 2020: final result and analysis
For years, the Steirereck from Heinz and Birgit Reitbauer has dominated the Falstaff ranking list of the best restaurants in Austria, but this year the gourmet temple from Vienna has lost its sole supremacy and has to share the victory with the Landhaus Bacher run by Thomas Dorfer and Lisl Wagner-Bacher and with the Obauer brothers, who run the Obauer restaurant in Werfen.
All three have achieved 99 Falstaff points, putting them at the top of the 3,000 restaurants described and rated in the Falstaff Guide 2020.
The highest ratings:
1st Steirereck: 99 Falstaff points
1st Landhaus Bacher: 99 Falstaff points
1st Obauer: 99 Falstaff points
2nd Amador: 98 Falstaff points
2nd Mraz & Sohn: 98 Falstaff points
2nd Rote Wand Chef’s Table at Schualhus: 98 Falstaff points
2nd Saag: 98 Falstaff points
3rd Döllerer: 98 Falstaff points
3rd Ikarus Hangar-7:98 Falstaff points
3rd Paznauner Stube Trofana Royal: 98 Falstaff points
There is a trend towards an increase in quality in the top ranks of Austrian restaurants. This is reflected, among other things, in the average rating, which was higher than ever this year.
It should also be noted that culinary standards, which specify the type and scope of quality targets to be achieved, have changed noticeably in recent years. Factors such as sustainability and innovative thinking are now hugely important for a good rating.
